Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?

Brief cool air during defrost cycles is normal. Persistent cold air usually means the system is stuck in cooling mode (reversing valve), low on refrigerant, or the auxiliary heat isn't engaging. If the outdoor unit is iced over and never defrosts, call for service.

Heat pump vs. furnace — which is right for my home?

Heat pumps win on efficiency in moderate climates and where electricity is reasonably priced; furnaces win on raw heating power in extreme cold and where natural gas is cheap. Dual-fuel splits the difference. The honest answer depends on your climate, utility rates, and existing infrastructure — worth a contractor's assessment.

How long do heat pumps last?

Typically 12–15 years, since they run year-round for both heating and cooling — more runtime hours than a furnace or AC alone. Regular maintenance is especially important for longevity.

Why is my heat pump icing up in winter?

Light frost that melts during defrost cycles is normal. Heavy ice that never clears points to a failed defrost control, low refrigerant, or restricted airflow. Don't chip at the ice — call a contractor before the compressor is damaged.

Are there rebates for heat pump installation?

Federal tax credits and many state and utility rebate programs apply to qualifying heat pump installations, and they change frequently. Ask the contractor what's currently available in your area during your free estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to common questions about connecting with independent local contractors.

Modern cold-climate heat pumps are rated to heat effectively well below freezing — many operate down to -15°F or lower. In very cold regions they're often paired with a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup that switches fuels at a set outdoor temperature. A local contractor can tell you which configuration fits your climate.
