Question 1

Do heat pumps work in cold climates?

Accepted Answer

Modern cold-climate heat pumps are rated to heat effectively well below freezing — many operate down to -15°F or lower. In very cold regions they're often paired with a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup that switches fuels at a set outdoor temperature. A local contractor can tell you which configuration fits your climate.

Question 2

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?

Accepted Answer

Brief cool air during defrost cycles is normal. Persistent cold air usually means the system is stuck in cooling mode (reversing valve), low on refrigerant, or the auxiliary heat isn't engaging. If the outdoor unit is iced over and never defrosts, call for service.

Question 3

Heat pump vs. furnace — which is right for my home?

Accepted Answer

Heat pumps win on efficiency in moderate climates and where electricity is reasonably priced; furnaces win on raw heating power in extreme cold and where natural gas is cheap. Dual-fuel splits the difference. The honest answer depends on your climate, utility rates, and existing infrastructure — worth a contractor's assessment.

Question 4

How long do heat pumps last?

Accepted Answer

Typically 12–15 years, since they run year-round for both heating and cooling — more runtime hours than a furnace or AC alone. Regular maintenance is especially important for longevity.

Question 5

Why is my heat pump icing up in winter?

Accepted Answer

Light frost that melts during defrost cycles is normal. Heavy ice that never clears points to a failed defrost control, low refrigerant, or restricted airflow. Don't chip at the ice — call a contractor before the compressor is damaged.

Question 6

Are there rebates for heat pump installation?

Accepted Answer

Federal tax credits and many state and utility rebate programs apply to qualifying heat pump installations, and they change frequently. Ask the contractor what's currently available in your area during your free estimate.

Question 8

How does the New York climate affect heat pump installation & repair in Buffalo?

Accepted Answer

NYC's 63-year median home age meets real winters and humid summers. Upstate markets like Buffalo (69-year median age) are furnace and boiler replacement territory. That climate is exactly why local experience matters: contractors serving Buffalo size and troubleshoot equipment for these conditions every day. NYC requires Department of Buildings permits; most municipalities statewide require mechanical permits.

Topic	Heat pump	Furnace + central AC
Equipment	One system heats and cools	Two separate systems
Efficiency	Moves heat rather than making it — very efficient in moderate cold	Gas heat is powerful; AC-only cooling
Cold climates	Cold-climate models or dual-fuel pairing recommended	Furnace handles extreme cold easily
Lifespan	~12–15 years (year-round runtime)	~15–20 years per system
Best fit	Moderate climates, all-electric homes	Extreme cold, cheap natural gas areas
